Surulere Got Talent, season 3

Mr. Bisi Onadipe Davids is the creative mind behind Surulere Got Talent, now in its 3rd season. We visited him in his office and had a conversation with him about his idea.

He’s determined to go to any length to help discover the best talents in Surulere and bring them fame.

Please, Sir, introduce yourself

My name is Bisi Onadipe Davids

Tell us about your background

Okay! I have been in Surulere for a long time. I was in the University of Ibadan briefly, and then I came to the University of Lagos to study sociology and anthropology and later did Social Enterprise in UniLag. I have also done a couple of other programs concerning empowerment and also skills acquisition because I believe so much in learning new things on a daily basis.

I also believe in being relevant to society which is where the ideology of adding value, transforming lives and creating platforms from the grassroots originated. I believe God has given everyone a level of talent one way or the other. So,  when you discover this talent it’s enough to get you to wherever you are going.

Tell us about Surulere Got Talent

Surulere Got Talent started in 2014. It was brought out of the passion for young people because that is how we started. I believe that every young person has a gift from God. Surulere in my own estimation is the center and the hub of entertainment and gifted people.

For example, when we had the first edition in 2014, the first civilian governor of Lagos state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande is from Surulere so we gave him a lifetime achievement award. We recognized him as the most formidable transformer governor in the whole of the western region. Another great transformation of Lagos state happened under someone from Surulere in the person of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).

We have different icons that came from Surulere in the entertainment and banking industry, among other industries. When it comes to entertainment, that list is endless. Surulere is such a phenomenal place in that we have a lot of young talents that are yet to be discovered. Therefore, we have the Surulere Got Talent Five Cardinal Creed- the Search, Discovery, Empowerment, the Glory, and the Giving Back.

The Search is when we look for the young ones; we search for the undiscovered, untapped talent, here we have the auditions. The Empowerment– here we go through a bit of grooming and advice from a role model. The Glory is at the grand finale where you have gone through auditions and qualified; finalists come to the grand finale and they are showcased. The Giving Back is when we talk about Surulere Got Talent/Hall of Fame recognition awards and recognize the heroes of Surulere.

It is a two in one event, where we discover the fresh ones and also reward the already discovered and established celebrities.
