June 12 in Nigeria: Buhari Renames Abuja National Stadium After MKO Abiola

Mko Abiola

President Mohammadu Buhari renamed the Abuja National Stadium as Moshood Abiola Stadium. This was part of the June 12 in Nigeria celebration that took place at Eagle’s Square, Abuja.

Just about a year ago, the president declared June 12 democracy day and honored late chief Abiola with GCFR. Abiola was a businessman and politician. He contested the 1993 general elections on the platform of the SDP and won.

However, the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election. Thereafter, Chief Abiola was arrested and sent to prison.

Abiola was assassinated in Abuja on July 7, 1998.
